Backwell House

BACKWELL HOUSE HOTEL

Backwell House Hotel is a beautiful, luxury Georgian country house in North Somerset with close links to Bristol Airport, trains stations and Bristol City Centre.

We’re nestled within a backdrop of leafy meadow and rolling hills that gives our little touch of Eden a truly tranquil experience. It makes us ideal as a Wedding venue, we can become private for parties or include an entire host of guest speakers for business functions and industry events. We have 9 luxurious, double bedrooms, all classic, boutique stye interiors with their own en-suites and breakfast included, an award winning restaurant, bar and gardens.

Backwell House was originally built by a prominent lawyer, Thomas Keedwell around 1813 with an estate of some 120 acres. Since this time it has been the residence of some notable people throughout it’s history. A year after being finished, the house was bought by the Sparrow family, and used as a rental property for different people for many years.

In 1861 a family called the Robinson’s took over residency of the house. The six sons were keen cricketers and in 1878, the eldest son, Alfred Robinson, had an invitation to produce a cricket team for a game against West Town. He recruited five more of his cousins and this team became known as the Backwell House XI, made entirely of Robinson family members. The game was played on the August Bank Holiday and for the next 87 years until 1964 was always made up of descendants of the first Robinson family team.  One of the most famous matches the team played was in August 1891. The Grace family had a few distinct ties to the Robinson family, one of the members, a notable W.G.Grace, had a few Robinsons as ‘brothers-in-law’. This led to a very famous match being played on the green area in front of Backwell House just beyond the ‘haw-haw’.

The house has recently been updated and sympathetically restored to provide a chic interior, worthy of any boutique hotel. Many of the prominent surnames from the history of the house have encapsulated in time by being used in naming of the 9 bedroom suites.

With stylish interiors and beautiful countryside surroundings, Backwell House Hotel is confidently the destination-du-jour for weekend getaways, a glass of fizz, family lunches, parties or afternoon teas.
